May 3, 1896, Whitefield, Lancashire, England, UK - November 24, 1990, Atlsford, England, UK, full name: Dorothy Gladys "Dodie" Smith - English novelist and playwright.

Dorothy was the only child in the family, her father, a bank manager, died in 1898 when Dorothy was only two years old. In 1910, Emma, ??Dowdy's mother, married and moved with her new husband and 14-year-old daughter to London.

In 1914, Dowdy entered the Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first role was in the play "The Players" by Arthur Pinero. She played several roles in the theater, continued her acting career, participated in front-line brigades during the First World War, speaking to soldiers.

After the end of her theatrical career, Dowdy struggled to find permanent work, although by then she had sold the script for the movie Rebellious Schoolgirls under the pseudonym Charles Henry Percy and wrote the one-act play British Talent, which won the Club Three Arts Award in 1924 year.

In 1923, she took a job in a furniture store in London and became a buyer (and mistress of the store owner) there. She published her first play, Autumn Crocus, in 1931 under the pseudonym S. L. Anthony. The play was a success, and its authorship, which was discovered by journalists, caused headlines like "Saleswoman - Playwright". Her next plays were successful. Dowie Smith spent most of her writing life in London, her former home marked with a plaque in her honor. Smith married in 1939, her husband died in 1987. During World War II, the family lived in the United States, but Dowdy Smith yearned for England. She wrote her first novel, I Capture the Castle, in Pennsylvania. She is best known for her novel 101 Dalmatians. on which the famous cartoon was filmed by the studio "Walt Disney".
