He began his acting career with theatrical performances after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. His theatrical career is closely associated with the Royal National Theater, where she has played a wide variety of roles. In 1965, Finlay played the role of Iago in the production of Othello with Laurence Olivier in the title role, and in the same year he embodied the same character in her adaptation, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.
