Born on November 14, 1951.
Director, producer, screenwriter, cameraman, actor.
Deliberate formalism in representing its national culture puts Zhang Yimou in a number of such diverse masters as, for example, Nikita Mikhalkov with his zeal to portray "Russian", Emir Kusturica with his desire to dance on behalf of the Balkan peoples and others. In Zhang's films there are love affairs, power struggles, and tender lyrical stories, but the main background on which the director projects all these passions is the Chinese way of life, Chinese society, Chinese history and, finally, the Chinese idea of ??laws, morality and okay. And if the heroes happen to forget about such "trifles", then reality quickly and sharply reminds of them. Zhang Yimou's individualistic principle is always conditioned by the social order; the autonomous existence of a person in his paintings does not occur either as a practice or even as an idea. "Judou" and "Raise the Red Lantern" are observations of the survival of the Chinese within the clan, immersion in the life of closed social groups. But with each next film, the director gradually moves from the private to the general, from the clan to the state, from closed family centers to the history of the clan, country and empire. By the way, this bias strictly coincides with the director's worldwide recognition. Zhang's latest films were already shot on full-scale historical plots ("Hero", "House of Flying Daggers") and in their genre differ significantly from the earlier films. However, the emphasized figurativeness, the hieroglyphicity of each frame, expressed in a special geometry, in following the aesthetics and problems of writing as such, are characteristic of most of his films. Considering the fact that almost all of his films are based on solid, novel-type literary works, PS Before turning to cinema, Zhang Yimou worked as a modest designer, set designer, after cameraman and actor, but now he puts on operas (Liu Sanze, or Third Sister Liu - a project for the Metropolitan Opera), directs the closing ceremony of the Olympics in 2004 Athens and shoots commercials for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
