Born August 12, 1952, Beijing, China - Chinese film director, multiple winner of international film awards. Representative of the so-called "fifth generation" of Chinese filmmakers.
During the Cultural Revolution, Chen joined the hungweipings. After graduating from the Cultural Revolution in 1978, he entered the Beijing Film Academy, where he studied with Zhang Yimou, and graduated in 1982.
Chen's debut feature film was Yellow Earth (1984). With this tape, the young director immediately attracted attention: "Yellow Earth" was included in the competition of the festival in Locarno and was awarded the Silver Leopard prize there. In 1988, Chen was invited to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time, but his film Farewell, My Concubine (1993) brought him a real international success, which collected a number of awards, including the Palme d'Or and BAFTA.
Following the success of Farewell, My Concubine, Chen directed two more historical films in the 1990s. In 2002, his first (and currently the only) English-language film Kill Me Softly was released. The film "The Oath" (2005) marked the director's transition to a new style, significantly different from his previous works.
