Her mother, Beverly Findlay, is a teacher, and her father, Christopher Findlay, is a financial consultant. Her great-grandfather, William Brown Findlay, who was born in Glasgow, made his middle name part of his surname. Brown Findlay trained with the National Children's Ballet Company. When she was 15, she was invited to the Royal Theater, Covent Garden for the summer season while on tour of the Mariinsky Ballet.
After graduating from high school, Jessica entered the London School of the Arts. In her sophomore year, she underwent several surgeries on her ankle, after which she announced that she would no longer be able to dance. She decided to start the acting career that she always thought about but never had the opportunity to try.
Jessica Brown Findlay was cast as the lead role of Emilia in Neil McCormick's 2011 film Albatross. At the same time, she got a role in two episodes of the television series "Bad" and one of the main roles in "Downton Abbey".
