In 1978, at the age of seven, Lea first appeared on stage in the Philippine production of The King and I. After that, she starred in the musical "Annie", and also joined the cast of productions "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Goodbye Darling", "Paper Moon", "Fantasy". In addition to her theater roles, Salonga hosted her own television show "With Love, Lea" and appeared on the children's television show That's Entertainment. In addition to school, she attended a special program for gifted children at the College of Music at the University of the Philippines. She starred in several films even before graduating from high school in 1988. Salonga entered the Catholic University of Ateneo de Manila. It was there that she auditioned for the role in Miss Saigon. Later, while working in New York, she completed two courses at Fordham University's Lincoln Center. In 1989, Lea Salonga was chosen to star in the new production of Miss Saigon. In 1995, Cameron McIntosh invited Lea Salonga to take part in a concert dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables at the Royal Albert Hall as Eponine. The line-up of this concert is still called the Best Line-up of Les Miserables Dream Cast. Salonga's partners were Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Judy Kuhn. In 1996, she again plays Eponine, this time in a London production. From 1997 to 2000 Salonga released several albums and took part in charity concerts. From late 2008 to mid-2009, Salonga played the title role in the thirty-week Asian tour of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Premiered in Manila in July 2008.
Salonga became the face of Avon cosmetics in the Philippines in July 2009. In July and August 2010, Lea Salonga played Grisabella in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Manila production of Cats. On October 10, 2010, she performed the role of Fantine in a concert dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Les Miserables, 15 years after her appearance on the 10th anniversary of the musical as Eponine. Salonga received the title of Disney Legend on August 19, 2011.
She was selected as a judge of the 60th Miss Universe 2011 pageant, held in the Brazilian city of San Paolo on September 12, 2011.
In February 2013, Salonga announced that she would be one of four mentors for the Voice of the Philippines competition, which premiered on June 23. In January 2014, Salonga confirmed her return to the show's second season, as well as a premiere of the Voice of the Philippines: Children competition.
