Russell's extraordinary beauty brought her to the attention of Paramount Pictures in 1942. Although Russell was almost clinically shy and had no acting experience, Paramount had high hopes for her and hired her acting teacher.
Gail made her film debut in 1943, playing the role of Virginia Lowry in Henry Oldrich Goes Glamorous. Russell's last film work was the role of Flor Brancato in Silent Call, which was released 3 months before her death. In total, she played in 28 films and television series.
On February 8, 1960, Gail received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the film industry.
