Saul Zaentz - Biography, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Filmography

Sol Zaenz - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Producer.

February 28, 1921, Passaic, New Jersey, USA - January 3, 2014, San Francisco, California, USA - American film producer and screenwriter.

Member of the Second World War. After discharging from the army, he went to work at Fantasy Records, which specialized in jazz. Zaenz's most notable development in this business was the opening and promotion of the Creedence Clearwater Revival group. In 1967 Zaents bought the studio. In 1970, the studio entered into a protracted lawsuit with John Fogerty over financial and copyright issues. Fogerty, offended by Zaenz, included several songs in his next album, where he made fun of Zaenz directly or in hints. Saul sued Fogerty and won moral damages. Shortly after this incident, Zaents quit the music business and sold his stake to Fantasy Records.

Since the early 1970s, Saul has been producing films. His paintings have won three Oscars and Golden Globes for the best films: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Amadeus (1984) and The English Patient (1996).

In the early 1970s, together with director John Burman, Zaenz designed the screenplay for the film adaptation of John Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings for United Artists. In the process, he became closely acquainted with Tolkien himself and his family. Although the film was never filmed then, Zaents became a big fan of the Professor's work. In 1976, he bought from the sons of Tolkien for $ 15 million all rights not only to the film adaptation, but also to any other use of the names, titles and other elements of the universe of Middle-earth mentioned in the books "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". Sol founded Tolkien Enterprises (later renamed Middle-Earth Enterprises), which is behind all the film adaptations and stage incarnations of The Hobbit and The Lord.

Jurisdiction of Middle-Earth Enterprises, however, does not extend to other works by John Tolkien, including the posthumously discovered work (The Silmarillion). They are owned by the Tolkien Estate, headed by the son of the writer, Christopher Tolkien. The rivalry between the two organizations often overshadows Tolkien's legacy: for example, Christopher tried to interfere with the filming of the films based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit through the courts, demanding the payment of $ 160 million, which, in his opinion, is owed to his family.

Middle-Earth Enterprises is somehow connected with all existing film adaptations of Tolkien. Zaents himself, however, was directly involved only in the filming of the film by Ralph Bakshi (1978). In a series of screen adaptations undertaken by New Line Cinema in the 2000s, 80-year-old Zaenz was replaced by producer Peter Jackson. In 2008, when a financial dispute arose between Jackson and New Line Cinema that threatened the filming of The Hobbit (2009), Zaenz openly supported Jackson. He stated that he agreed to shoot the film only if Jackson participated, and if by the end of 2009 New Line Cinema did not settle its relationship with the director and did not start filming, Saul would revoke the license and, together with Jackson, would start looking for another studio. The conflict was resolved in 2009: Jackson got the producer's chair, and directed by Guillermo del Toro. After some time, del Toro left the project, and Peter Jackson again took over as director.

Sol Zaents is a three-time Oscar winner (not counting the Thalberg Honorary Award) for producing Best Film of the Year. Zaentz is the head of Middle-Earth Enterprises and the owner of the rights to characters, names and titles from John Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and is one of the main organizers of all the film adaptations of these books.
