December 18, 1917 - February 4, 2005 - American actor, film director, screenwriter, playwright, and political activist. At the insistence of his parents, he entered Howard University in Washington, but dropped out in 1939 and rushed to New York, wanting to start an acting career there. In the same year, he first appeared on the stage in one of the theaters in Harlem. He made his film debut in 1950 in No Exit starring Sidney Poitier. Ossie Davis, along with other African American actors of his generation, tried to combat the practice of inviting only stereotypical roles, such as butlers, which were considered standard for black actors at the time. He tried to follow the example of Sidney Poitier and achieve more serious roles in the cinema, and he, like Poitiers and Bill Cosby, sometimes succeeded. One such notable role was Jaco King in Sidney Lumet's war drama The Hill, starring Sean Connery. In 1968, he appeared in the film Scalp Hunters, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. When he did get to play the roles of butlers, drivers or porters, he tried to play them with the utmost dignity. Ossie Davis, along with Melvin Van Peebles and Gordon Parks, was one of the few African American directors of his generation, filming five films in the 1970s. In addition, he also proved himself as a screenwriter, writing several scripts for films and plays. Ossie Davis, in addition to cinema, continued to play on theatrical stages, including on Broadway, for which he was twice nominated for the Tony Award .
In the later stages of his film career, Ossie was in demand by director Spike Lee, who directed him in several of his films, including Do It Right (1989), Love Fever (1991), Get on the Bus (1996) and She hates me ”(2004). In the 1990s, he was also in demand on television, where he often appeared in various television films and series ("12 Angry Men", "Touched by an Angel"), and was also a storyteller. In addition, he had prominent roles in Joe Against the Volcano (1990), Gladiator (1992), Policeman and a Half (1993), Old Grumbles (1993), Client (1994) and Doctor Dolittle "(1998). In 1992, in the final scene of the film Malcolm X, he gives the same speech as at the funeral of the famous activist in 1965. He starred in the interactive movie Ripper as Virtual Herald editor Ben Dodds (1996). He played his last role in 2005 in the TV series Sex in Another City, in the episode where his character Melvin Porter dies. This episode was released in May of the same year and was dedicated to the memory of the actor.
