In South Africa, the future actor worked as a regular hairdresser in Krunstad, although he claimed to be a diamond carver, dance tutor and boxer. It was in the hairdressing salon that he met his future first wife. In 1936, he and Bertie got married, the next year they had a daughter, and James's father-in-law, businessman Joseph Delmont, bought his son-in-law a hairdresser where he worked. However, less than a year later, Sid announced that he decided to become an actor, quit hairdressing, joined the troupe, and then got a job at the South African Broadcasting Corporation radio company. James' first divorce followed in 1940. During World War II, James served as a lieutenant in the Recreation Company. Immediately after the end of the war, in 1945, James, having saved enough money, left for the UK. For the first time on the screen, Sid James appeared in 1947 in the film "Black Memory" and later continued to act regularly: over the 29 years of his film career, James appeared in almost one and a half hundred films and TV series.
Sid James died two weeks before his 63rd birthday, in the English Sunderland. At the Sunderland Empire Theater, while playing a role in the production of The Mating Game, he had a heart attack, he was urgently taken to the hospital, where he died an hour later. His body was cremated and his ashes were buried in the Golders Green crematorium.
