Born January 10, 1960, Nairobi, Kenya is a British screenwriter, film director and producer of Indian descent.
In 1961 her family moved to the UK and settled in London, in the Southall area. After graduating from Gurinder School, Chadha entered the University of East Anglia, where she studied politics and economics, and in 1984 - at the London College of Communications.
Chadha began her radio career in the mid-eighties, then worked as a journalist for the BBC news service.
In 1989, Chadha released the documentary I'm British, but…, about the life of Asian British people.
In 1990, Gurinder Chadha started a production company that released the 11-minute film Nice Arrangement (1991) as the first film, about a British-Asian wedding.
Her film Bhaji on the Beach (1993) has won numerous international awards, such as BAFTA for Best British Film and Evening Standard British Film Award for Best British Film Debut.
Film "What Are We Cooking?" (2000) participated in the Sundance Film Festival; the script for the film was the first British script to enter the Sundance Writing Laboratory. Chadha received the London Film Critics' Circle Award for Best British Director.
