Born on January 13, 1938, maestro Santura Shivkumar Sharma, a wonderful musician, great composer, sympathetic and kind guru, conscientious and empathetic citizen, this living legend is truly the embodiment of Indian character and values. Santur, a folk musical instrument from the Kashmir Valley, became a classic thanks to Maestro Shivkumar Sharma. In the early decades of the 20th century, santur or sata-tantri wine (Shata-Tantri Veena), as it was called in ancient times, was used as an accompaniment to a special chant called Sufyana Mausiki. When renowned vocalist from Jammu, maestro Uma Dutt Sharma, and student of maestro Bade Ramdasji from Benaras learned about santur, maestro Uma Dutt Sharma became convinced of the potential of this instrument. After conducting an expensive scientific study, he commissioned his only son Shivkumar to install it on the concert stage. The rest, as they say, is history. But the path to success was thorny. After several broadcasts and radio appearances in 1955, he took part in a concert of national importance in Mumbai. This was a turning point in his life, where he was greeted with applause and there he was criticized by orthodox musicians and listeners. In their opinion, santur was not a full-fledged musical instrument that could be used to perform classical music. Shivkumar was not upset, and he did not lose the desire to play. Instead, in his characteristic manner, he took this criticism as a challenge. After careful research, he made several important modifications to this hundred-stringed instrument, such as a new chromatic arrangement of notes and increased the range for playing three full octaves. In addition, he created a new technique of playing, at which he could hold notes and maintain a continuous sound. Today santur is on a par with all classical musical instruments; it is played not only in all parts of India, but also in different countries of the world. Maestro Sharma never compromises on the purity of the music; using a broad approach, he has created groundbreaking and highly acclaimed albums such as Call of the Valley, Feelings, Mountains and others. He is among those rare musicians who can successfully create music for films. For forty years, santur has always been used in music for Indian films.
