Born December 8, 1948 in London, UK into the family of the Scottish actor Russell Waters. John had five sisters and brothers. The family lived in Teddington, near the famous Thames TV studio. This neighborhood played a great role for John in determining his future profession.
In the school theater he performed in plays by Shakespeare. He was fond of rock music, organized a youth rock group "The Riots" .
In 1968 he left for Sydney, Australia. He worked on a sheep farm, a storekeeper, and in the evenings he played in a rock band in a nightclub.
Since 1969 - on the theater stage, starring Claude in the musical "Hair". Since 1972 he has been on Australian TV. Since 1976 - on the big screen in the film "End Play" (Mark Gifford) .
In the 70s - 80s, John Waters was at the height of his career. He gained extraordinary popularity among viewers after the release of the miniseries "All the Rivers Flow" (Brenton Edwards, 1983) and "All the Rivers 2" (1990) .
John Russell is married with 5 children and has three grandchildren.
