Victor Marie Hugo became one of the brightest representatives of French romanticism, a recognized figure in all world literature. Victor Hugo was born at the end of the cold February 1802. As a child, he traveled a lot, having visited both Corsica and Elba, Madrid, Marseille and many other European cities. Hugo began to write at the age of fourteen, and when a nineteen-year-old boy lost his mother and the question of self-sufficiency became tough for him, he chose literature as his profession. Victor Hugo's contribution to this field of art is truly invaluable. The writer became famous during his lifetime: his works were noted by Louis XVIII himself, having appointed the author an annual rent, and in 1841 he became a member of the French Academy, which was evidence of the official recognition of his literary merits.

After the coup of 1851, Hugo flees France to the British Isles. He will return to his homeland only after 20 years, where he will spend the rest of his life, until 1885.
