Victor Marie Hugo became one of the brightest representatives of French romanticism, a recognized figure in all world literature. Victor Hugo's contribution to this field of art is truly invaluable. The writer became famous during his lifetime: his works were noted by Louis XVIII himself, having appointed the author an annual rent, and in 1841 he became a member of the French Academy, which was evidence of the official recognition of his literary merits.

After the coup of 1851, Hugo flees France to the British Isles. He will return to his homeland only after 20 years, where he will spend the rest of his life, until 1885.
