Mister's parents, Connie and Doug Mister, were part of a group that smuggled marijuana from Jamaica to the United States. They were both arrested for their involvement in smuggling activities. Before the trial began, they were released on bail, at which time Connie became pregnant. She was later sentenced to 10 years in a Texas state prison, where she spent most of her pregnancy. Leighton was born in a Texas hospital where her mother was taken during labor. Three months after giving birth, the mother returned to prison to continue serving her sentence. After spending 16 months in prison, she was released early and began to live with her daughter.
