She was brought up in a Catholic family, and her father was a member of the officers of the New York City Police Department. Margaret is Irish by origin.
Graduated from Baldwin Senior High School in 1976. Graduated from Hofstra University.
Margaret began her film career in 1979, at first she played in soap operas. Her first role was as Paige Madison on Night's Threshold, in the seven months that her character, Paige, went through 7 suicide attempts and eventually married her half-brother. This role was followed by the role of Margot Montgomery-Hughes in the TV series How the World Turns, in which Margaret played during 1982-1983.
After that, several dozen more roles of the actress followed, but they were not as successful as the previous ones, or even completely remained unnoticed. Her popularity revived in 2007 after her role in the TV series "Gossip Girl". Her character is designer Eleanor Waldorf-Rose, mother of the main character of the series Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester).
