Born March 13, 1958, Mexico City is a Mexican writer, screenwriter and film director.

Arriaga's childhood was spent in one of the dysfunctional quarters of Mexico City. At the age of 13, he was seriously injured in a street fight, as a result of which he lost his sense of smell. Graduated from the Ibero-American University in Mexico City with a Master's degree in Psychology.

After completing his degree, Arriaga taught at the university, where he met director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Together they conceived and implemented a multi-story film project set in Mexico City. Arriaga wrote the script and Gonzalez Inarritu directed it. The film was named "Bitch Love" (1999). The film gained wide popularity outside Mexico, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and won a BAFTA in the same nomination.

This success was followed by the invitation of Gonzalez Inarritu and Arriaga to the USA at Universal Studios. There, Gonzalez Inarritu directed the film 21 Grams (2003) with the participation of Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, based on a script by Arriaga.

In 2005, Tommy Lee Jones's debut film Three Graves, written by Guillermo Arriaga, was released. The film entered the competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and Arriaga won the prize for best screenplay there.

The third film to emerge from the creative tandem of Arriaga and Gonzalez Inarritu is Babylon (2006). As in the first two films of the duo, its script is based on several stories intertwined in the course of the film, only in Babylon they are set in different countries and on different continents - in North America, Africa and Asia. The film, which starred Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, entered the Cannes Film Festival competition and won 25 awards worldwide, but only one Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA. Arriaga did not receive major awards for the script of the film, although he was nominated for an Oscar for the first time in his life.

Shortly before the premiere of Babylon, significant disagreements arose between Gonzalez Inarritu and Arriaga. This led to the fact that Arriaga was not included in the delegation of the film at the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, the director and screenwriter have not worked together.

In 2007, the film El Bufalo de la Noche by Mexican director Jorge Hernandez Aldana was released. The script for this film was written by Arriaga and is a reworking of his own story of the same name.

On November 5, 2007, filming began in New Mexico on Arriaga's first feature film, The Burning Plain, starring Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron. The script, written by Arriaga himself, is built according to the same scheme as in his previous works - several stories are played out in the film at once. The film was completed for the 2008 Venice Film Festival and included in its program.
