Joseph graduated from the University of Miami, where he studied music and drama, and the United States Military Academy.
He plays the clarinet professionally, in particular, he has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1982 he met Luciano Pavarotti, and they remained close friends until the tenor's death in 2007.
