Future People's Artist of Russia and the Soviet Union, director who devoted himself to animation, artist and teacher Ivan Ivanov-Vano was born in Moscow at the very beginning of the last century on January 27, 1900. At the age of eight, he staged the first puppet shows based on Pushkin's tales, painted decorations, created cardboard and paper characters, and voiced them. Growing up, he became interested in sports, played hockey and football, but went to study at VKHUTEMAS. Ilya Mashkov became his mentor. Ivanov-Vano dreamed of illustrating books and magazines, but his fate changed at the moment when a friend of his youth, Vladimir Suteev, brought him to the animation workshop of the State Technical College (State Technical School of Cinematography).

Fate will connect Ivan Ivanov-Vano with animators, scriptwriters, directors of this workshop for twelve long years, because it was there that those Soviet cartoons were born, which the whole world will applaud. In 1925, the first of them was created - China on fire, then the first children's - Senka-African, where Ivanov-Vano is already acting as a director. The year 1936 marked a new period in his life - the beginning of work at Soyuzmultfilm, where the interpretation of Disney technology in relation to Russian fairy-tale culture will make it possible to create masterpieces of Russian animation: Moidodyr and the Little Humpbacked Horse, Snegurochka and Twelve Months and others. One of the most significant and avant-garde is considered to be a cartoon with Ivan Ivanov-Vano as a director - Lefty. The Little Humpbacked Horse will be awarded, again, for the first time high awards in Marianske Lazne and Cannes at international festivals, and almost thirty years later he will receive the grand prix in Tehran and Varna. The left-hander will be awarded an honorary diploma at the Leipzig Festival.

Ivanov-Vano will initiate the opening of the animation department at VGIK, write a series of books and memoirs dedicated to this art form. In total, cartoons with the participation of Ivan Ivanov-Vano in the position of animator, production designer and director, and more than seventy of them have been created, will be awarded twenty international awards and prizes, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as the Orders of Lenin and the October Revolution, Ivanov-Vano will be awarded for great contribution to Russian cinema.

He will die in March 1987 and will be buried at the Novodevichy cemetery.
