Born July 22, 1955.
He began his career at 17 as a courier at the Hong Kong television studio, TVB. Moving up the corporate ladder, Tho served as director and executive producer since 1973. Having made his film debut in 1980 with The Mysterious Affair, he continued to work in television. It became known to the general public when his film "All About A Long," starring Chow Yunfat, became one of the top box-office hits of the year. In 1988, he co-filmed his first action movie Big Deal with Cui Hark. In the late eighties, To achieved commercial success with a large number of his films, mostly comedies. In 1988, his film "The Eighth Happiness" became the biggest commercial success of the year. In 1996 Toh and his longtime companion Wai Kafai formed the Milkyway Image film company, specializing in the production of low-budget independent films. Johnny To's films have been shown at the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals on several occasions. In 2011, Johnny To was elected as a member of the jury at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.
