Valerie Chow was born on December 16, 1970 in Canada under the name Chow Ka-Ling and was the only child in a wealthy family. She moved to Hong Kong with her family and entered the University of Hong Kong. A beautiful and tall (173 cm) student had a straight road to the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant, where in 1991 she, a “dark horse”, became first runner-up.

Prior to her acting career, Valerie hosted the hit TV show "Pearl" on TVB. And after the debut cameo in Peter Chan's film "It's not heavy - it's my father!" (1993) she starred in 12 films in two years!

A few months later, however, her career took a sharp turn. In the 20-episode TVB series Fate of the Clairvoyant, she played the mistress of a married man who ultimately divorced his fat wife because of her. The series was a success, but the heroine Valerie was perceived by the audience with condemnation. The label of the insidious lovemaker was firmly attached to the actress herself.

In 1995–97, Valerie appeared in a number of B-category paintings, usually in negative roles. The most notable characters of this period were the terrorist in High Risk, Wong Jing's box office hit, and the prostitute in Tsui Hark's The Blade. After “Street Angels” (1996) and “Hero” (1997), Valerie finally became disillusioned with her career in Hong Kong and went to conquer Hollywood.

She changed her name to Rachel Shane, and in 1998 became the first Chinese fashion model to contract with Revlon, appearing in press and television advertisements alongside Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, and Melanie Griffith.

Since 2003, Valerie Chow has decided to retire from show business altogether, and for six years worked as an advertising specialist for Pedder Group, Lane Crawford's footwear and accessories division.
