Born June 7, 1966, New Jersey is an American actor, screenwriter, director and producer.

Graduated from Boston College in 1988 and later from Yale University Drama School. McCarthy has played in other films as well. He played the role of James Bradley in Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers. He gained fame and work on television, playing the role of journalist Scott Templeten in the series "The Wire".

Thomas McCarthy's directorial debut, The Stationmaster, for which he also wrote the screenplay, won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and the Audience Award in the Dramatic Film category at the Sundance Film Festival. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and won prizes at the San Sebastian Film Festival and film screenings in Mexico City and Stockholm. McCarthy's second film, The Visitor, premiered at the 2007 Toronto Film Festival. The film also received high reviews from film critics and several awards, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor (Richard Jenkins).

In 2009, Thomas McCarthy starred in the films Lovely Bones and 2012; he also filmed in October - November the pilot episode of the fantasy series "Game of Thrones", which premiered on HBO in April 2011, but due to changes in the cast and the need to re-shoot "pilot", he refused to participate in the project and did not listed with current cast on HBO's website.
