Stefan Hantel (known under the pseudonym Shantel; January 1, 1968, Frankfurt) is a German musician, producer and DJ, known for electronic remixes of Balkan traditional music and for his work with gypsy brass bands. Descendant of refugees from Bukovina. Stefan began his DJ career in Frankfurt, Germany, inspired by the public reaction to Romanian folk brass music performed by Fanfare Ciocarlia and Boban Markovic. The first sets were released on the Studio! K7 label. In 1991 he lived in Paris for a while, studying graphic design, while maintaining a DJ activity. After returning to Frankfurt, he opened his own club. In 1994, together with Daniel Haxman, he founded the recording label Essay Recordings, on which he released two compilations called Bucovina Club, which gained worldwide fame. In 2006 he won the BBC Radio 3 Ethnic Music Award. The composition Mahalageasca (Bucovina Dub) was chosen as the soundtrack for the film "Borat". Along with other DJs, Stefan Hantel contributed to the Electric Gypsyland remix compilation of Taraf de Haidouks and Kocani Orkestar melodies, released by the Belgian label Crammed Discs. Disko Partizani's next album was released on the same label. Stefan Hantel directs the Bucovina Club Orchestra (Bucovina Club Orkestar), with which he performs at concerts.
