Madrigal was born in San Francisco, California. He grew up in the San Francisco Inner Sunset District, where his neighbors included future comedians Mike Pritchard and Margaret Cho. He is from Italy (from Sicily) and Mexican (from Tijuana) descent.
Madrigal worked for 10 years in human resources recruitment agencies run by his family, where one of his main responsibilities was to fire people. In 1998, he decided to pursue a full-time career in comedy.
Madrigal began his career in San Francisco in comedy clubs, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Fresh Robots sketching team he founded. In 2002, he enjoyed his first major exposure at two comedy festivals: SF Sketchfest, as part of Fresh Robots, and New Faces for the Laugh-Only Festival in Montreal.
In 2004, Madrigal received the Jury's Award for Best Comedian at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. After winning the award, he signed a talent deal with CBS.
