June 12, 1918 - September 16, 2001 - American producer of films of the category B.
Arkoff first studied law, but then, together with business partner James H. Nicholson and director Roger Corman, he made eighteen films. In the 1950s, Nicholson founded the American Releasing Corporation, which later became known as American International Pictures, and made Arkoff vice president. American International Pictures films were mostly low-budget films that only lasted a few days, but almost all of them became profitable. Arkoff has also had a hand in producing films of other genres, such as Beach Party People and Biker films. His campaign also played a significant role in taking horror films to the next level, resulting in successful films such as Blacula, I Was a Teenage Werewolf and Something with Two Heads. Many famous actors Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester, Vincent Price, as well as others whose names later became widely known Don Johnson, Nick Nolte, Diane Ladd, and especially Jack Nicholson. Actors Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper, who were shunned by many producers in Hollywood during the 1960s and 1970s, also found work with Arkoff. Arkoff's most financially successful work was the adaptation of Jay Anson's The Amityville Horror. Shortly after American International Pictures ceased to exist, Arkoff founded his own company, Arkoff International Pictures .
Arkoff began his career in Hollywood as the producer of The Hank McCune Show, an original comedy released in 1951, which used the innovation of offscreen laughter instead of the usual audience in the studio. In 2000, Arkoff was featured alongside former colleagues including Roger Corman, Dick Miller, and Peter Bogdanovich, in a documentary on the rise and fall of American cinema, KHALTURA! The Secret History of American Films.
