In 1918-1920 he was a student of the Moscow Proletkult studio and director of a front-line theater, in 1921-1925 he studied and worked at the First Workers' Theater of Proletkult.
Was a director in workers' clubs. In 1924-1941 he was an actor, assistant director and director of film studios: Goskino, Soyuzkino, Mosfilm. Member of the Great Patriotic War. In 1946-1948, 1952-1961 - director of the Mosfilm film studios, in 1948-1952 - assistant director of Mosfilm, filmed with Sergei Eisenstein.
