The future actress was born on August 2, 1912 in New York into the family of silent film actress Anna Lehr and her husband Sam McKim, an actor and film director. When the girl was four years old, her parents divorced, and the mother and daughter moved to Hollywood. At the same young age, Anna made her film debut in the drama Ramona (1916), then in 1917 and 1920 she appeared in two more silent films under the pseudonym Baby Anna Lehr.
