Jim Carter was born on 19 August 1948 in Harrogate, Yorkshire, UK. After graduating from Ashville College, he studied law at the University of Sussex for two years until he became interested in acting. After leaving Carter University, he joined the theater group in Brighton.
His father worked in the Department of Defense, and his mother served in the British Women's Army, and later got a job as a secretary at the school.
