Peter Greenway - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, music videos.
Born April 5, 1942 in Newport, Wales. His parents were middle class. Raised by a Welsh mother, aunts and maternal grandmother, Peter spent his early years in a typical working-class home in the Newport industrial district. When his father, after spending four years at the front, returned home, the family of three-year-old Peter left Wales and moved to London, settling in the East End, closer to his father's relatives who lived in Essex. Meeting each other and moving home started a difficult father-son relationship. Peter's father was in the construction business, devoting all his free time to birdwatching. Father's parents were hereditary gardeners and served in private estates. Greenway's mother worked as a teacher. Peter had been studying at Forest School since 1948, and he had bad memories of it: xiii. Later, he found the austere school setting similar to that depicted by director Lindsay Anderson in If ..... Peter was a poor student in mathematics, but he immersed himself in literature and history, especially in the Middle Ages. He was interested in European painting, his drawing lessons were encouraged, and already as a child, Peter decided to associate himself with painting, although he did not know how. By the age of 14-15, Greenaway was especially interested in landscape painting. While cycling in Essex, he often sketched the area, and during the summer holidays, At the age of 9-10, partly imitating his ornithologist father, partly competing with him, Greenway began to collect a collection of insects. His father often took him to the Netherlands to watch birds in the wilderness on weekends and Peter was fascinated by the scenery. At the age of 16, Peter discovered the work of J.L. Borges, who became his favorite writer. Cinema remained for Greenaway "something to go with friends" until, together with a school friend, he was in the cinema to view the "Seventh Seal" by I. Bergman, published in 1957. Peter watched the film twice over the course of five days. The film made a huge impression on young Greenaway and became the beginning of a passion for European auteur cinema. Greenway focuses on Antonioni, Pasolini, Godard and Rene. In 1959, Peter and his friend Brian Love began filming The Death of Mood on a Super 8 camera. Greenaway's first film, romantic and melancholy, featured images of Millais's Ophelia and Death from The Seventh Seal. It was filmed in four major cemeteries in London, including Highgate, where Karl Marx was buried. In September 1960, Greenway began attending the Walthamstow School of the Arts, where he became a friend of Ian Dury. Peter spent four years there and was trained as an artist. In 1961 he met Michael Nyman. In February-March 1963, Greenway visited an exhibition of paintings by R.B. China, who became his favorite artist - he legitimized everything that Peter wanted to create in painting. At the same time, Greenaway had a desire to make films regularly, like Godard. After graduating in 1964, 22-year-old Greenway bought a mechanical 16mm Bolex camera and tried to go to film school at the Royal College of Art, but, unlike Ian Dury, did not make it through a 400-man competition for 12 places. After this failure, Greenway has been doing various jobs for about a year: he tries his hand at film criticism and writes “completely unreadable articles, like The Ties Between Chirico and Alain Rene, "serves as a watchman at the British Film Institute," the third assistant editor on trial "at Soho editors. Finally, in 1965, he landed a suitable job at COI - the Central Office of Information, where for eleven years he worked as an editor of documentaries about life in the UK, intended to be shown around the world.
