Born April 5, 1942 in Newport, Wales. His parents were middle class. Raised by a Welsh mother, aunts and maternal grandmother, Peter spent his early years in a typical working-class home in the Newport industrial district. When his father, after spending four years at the front, returned home, the family of three-year-old Peter left Wales and moved to London, settling in the East End, closer to his father's relatives who lived in Essex.
