Shirley McLain was born in April 1934 in Virginia in a Baptist family - a professor of psychology and a drama teacher. Shirley and her family moved from city to city several times and, in the end, stopped in Arlington, where she received her education.
At an early age, the mother sent the future actress to a ballet class, which at first inspired the girl. But she often got male roles, since only she was one of the whole group who could boast of high stature, she soon developed a complex, and she left classes, preferring pop dances to them. Leaving the province behind, she moves to New York, where she first dances on Broadway, but later decides to start an acting career. In 1954 she made her stage debut in the musical Pajama Play.
A year later, the first film with Shirley McLain is released - Trouble with Harry, a comedic detective that brought the actress her first Golden Globe award for Best Debut Actress. This was followed by shooting in films Around the World in 80 days, as well as in the melodrama And they ran up. The latter fully revealed her acting talent, and Shirley was nominated for the prestigious Oscar for the first time.
