Started acting at the age of five. Her professional debut took place in 1997. In 2016, the actress worked on the dubbing of the animated feature Black Cat Rudolph, where her partners on the set were Arata Furuta, Sandayu Dokumamushi, Nana Mizuki, Rio Sasaki, Rehei Suzuki, Yuka Terasaki, Norito Yashima, Akio Otsuka and others.
In 2007, Mao met actor Matsumoto Jun while filming the melodramatic series Flowers After Berries. The couple has been dating for over 10 years.
