A landmark in the literary space of Ukraine, writer and poet Grigory Kvit ka-Osnovyanenko was born on November 29 (new style) in 1778 in the village of Osnova, not far from Kharkov. The family of the writer was of Cossack-elders' origin, they were very reverent and respectful of Ukrainian culture. Raised in such traditions, Gregory became a very influential and ideological cultural figure.

Gregory received his education at home, and later at the Kuryag school at the monastery. From the age of fifteen he mastered military skills: first as a sergeant in a cavalry regiment, later as a captain of the Kharkov and Siversky regiments.

The roles of Grigoriy Kvitka-Osnovyanenko in the progress of Ukrainian culture are very diverse. He was one of the founders of the Kharkov professional theater (the experience of playing in the theater for his family came in handy). In the 1820s, he wrote classical works for the Ukrainian theater - A visitor from the capital, or Turmoil in the district town, Matchmaking on Goncharovka and Shelmenko the batman.

The contribution of Gregory to Ukrainian journalism cannot be underestimated either: from 1816 to 1817 the writer was engaged in publishing the first Ukrainian magazine, Ukrainian Bulletin. In addition, Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovyanenko played the main roles in the formation of two new genres of Ukrainian literature: burlesque-realistic and sentimental prose. Some works, such as Oksana Serdeshna, have been published in French, Polish, Bulgarian and many other languages. Matchmaking on Goncharovka and the Konotop witch were filmed.

Gregory had his own philosophy, according to which reforms in Ukraine had to begin precisely with art and literature. He did everything to transform the life of Ukrainians, to restore their national consciousness.

The writer died in Kharkov in 1843 after a long serious illness.
