World War II brought three enduring female images to cinema: Rivet Rosie (a woman who does a great job of a man's job), Betty Grable's legs (the queen of glossy covers) and Greer's "Duchess" - Mrs Miniver (Hollywood idea of ??the middle class respectability, perseverance, self-control, kindness and humility) .
For a long time, directors could not fully exploit Garson's versatile talent. She first gained applause when she appeared as the charming Katherine Chipping, the teacher's wife in Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939), for which she won the first of her seven Oscar nominations for Best Actress. Having played alongside the phlegmatic, in his own way handsome Walter Pidgeon in "Mrs. Miniver" (1942) - a film that presents the viewer an idealized version of modern Britain, Garson achieved immense popularity.
Garson played the scientist's wife no less talented, who refuses to let her husband sit in the back seat in Madame Curie (1943). After the war, her career began to decline. Minivan History (1950) was a futile attempt to recapture a bygone era of self-sacrifice and sentimentality. Although she continued to perform on stage, and quite successfully, in the movies she only appeared in supporting roles. True, there was the role of Calpurnia in Julia Caesar (1953). Her spectacular appearance on the big screen was a nostalgic attempt to rethink Miniver and the war years: the role of the young, submissive, but strong Eleanor Roosevelt in Rising at Campobello (1960) .
She died in 1996 (Dallas, Texas, USA).
