Valery was born on 19 March 1949 in the village of Uct-Uca, the Komi Republic. The singer's parents were veterinarians and livestock specialists, they were engaged in deer breeding. Father - Yakov Stepanovich Leontyev was from the Arkhangelsk region, mother - Ekaterina Ivanovna Leontyev (nee Klyuts) - from Ukraine. Also, Valery Leontiev had an older sister, Maya, for nineteen years.
In 1961 the Leontievs moved to Yuryevets, Ivanovo region. Since childhood, Valery wanted to become an oceanologist. Therefore, after graduating from school, I decided to enter the Far Eastern University. However, he did not succeed in accomplishing his plan, at that time the family did not have enough funds for this. Valery gives the documents to GITIS, however, he soon takes them back. The singer returns to Yuryevets, where he tried many professions: from a tailor to an electrician.
In 1971 Leontyev moved to Vorkuta and entered the mining institute. To ensure his material stability, Valery gets a job as a laboratory assistant at an institute. In the same year, Valery Leontyev's first roles were played on the stage of the Shakhtar Palace of Culture. Here in 1972 Valery's first concert was held.
For winning the song-72 music competition in Syktyvkar, Valery gets the opportunity to study pop art in Moscow. However, without completing his studies, in 1973 Leontyev returned to Syktyvkar and became a member of the Echo group. Six years later, Valery continues his studies at the Gorky Philharmonic.
