Graduated from Arrow High School in England, Sarah Lawrence College in New York and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

His father Dominic Elwes and grandfather Simon Elwes are famous portrait painters in Great Britain. Father committed suicide in 1975.

His first big role was Westley's character in The Princess Bride.
