Born February 20, 1942 in Paris into a Jewish family. In 1961 he entered the Institute of Cinematography (L'Institut des hautes etudes cinematographiques, IDHEC) .
Since the mid-1960s, he worked as an assistant director, participating in the filming of films by Marcel Carne, Michel Deville, Jean-Luc Godard. In 1976 he shot his first feature film, The Best Way to March. For this film, the director was nominated for two Cesars awards - as director and screenwriter. Over the years of creative activity, he was 15 times nominated for the Cesar award, seven of them as the best director, but he received the award only once - for the script for the film "Under preliminary investigation" (1981). Miller's painting Winter Holidays (1998) won the Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize. He acted as an actor in several films by Godard, Truffaut and others. In 2007-2010 he was president of the largest French film school La Femis (formerly IDHEC). For twenty years (1993-2012), he headed the Europa Cinemas chain, which unites art-house cinemas that support European cinema. Died of cancer in Paris on April 4, 2012.
