Born October 30, 1937 in Paris. His parents are Algerian Jews. He made his debut as a cinematographer for short films. At the age of 13, he received the prize of the debut competition at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1956, Claude Lelouch authored a hidden camera report on the USSR "When the Curtain Rises", which he bought for broadcast on French television. Debut directorial work in a full-length film - "The Human Essence" (1961) - did not have much success. On the set of the film "The Cranes Are Flying" (1957) as an assistant operator, he worked for two days as a film enthusiast from France, who arrived in Moscow with a tourist group and accidentally ended up at the Mosfilm film studio .
In 1966, Claude Lelouch directed the film Man and Woman, which brought him worldwide fame and was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and two Oscars for Best Foreign Film and Best Original Screenplay. Lelouch acted as a scriptwriter, director, producer and operator of the film. The main roles were played by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Anouk Aime, and the music for the film was written by Francis Leigh. In the following years, Lelouch worked as an independent filmmaker, filming commercial films with his own film company Films 13 (fr. Les Films 13). The adventurous comedy "Adventure is an adventure" (1972), the crime comedy "Happy New Year!" (1973), detective "Cat and Mouse" (1975), drama "Second Chance" (1976) .
The 1988 film Fate's Minion wins two Cesars - for the lead actor (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and for the soundtrack (Francis Leigh). Based on the Victor Hugo novel, Les Miserables (1996) won the American Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
