As a child, he worked as a newspaper delivery boy, delivered the Los Angeles Times to film industry figures, including Cecil De Mille. He was present on the set of the film "Intolerance" with David Wark Griffith.
He studied acting in Hollywood and at Pomona College, during his studies he acted in extras, worked as a stunt double. He played his first significant role in The Age of Jazz (1929) opposite Douglas Fairbanks.
During his half-century career, he has appeared in more than 90 films. His roles in Westerns have received the greatest recognition.
