November 26, 1909 - March 6, 2004 - American actress.
She was born in Los Angeles, where her father served as a military man. She spent her childhood in Chicago, where she received her secondary education and then entered the University of Chicago. After studying there for only two years, she returned to California, where she made her film debut in 1929. She performed her first leading role a year later in the film Playboy from Paris with Maurice Chevalier in the title role. Her further success in cinema was facilitated by the inclusion of Frances in 1931 in the WAMPAS Baby Stars list.
In subsequent years, Frances Dee continued to appear frequently on movie screens, but in most cases only in secondary roles. Over the years of her film career, which lasted until 1954, Frances starred in 53 films, including the films "American Tragedy" (1931), "Little Women" (1933), "Human Burden" (1934), "Becky Sharp" (1935) , "Cheerful Deception" (1935), "So Our Night Ends" (1941), "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943), "Dear Friend's Personal Files" (1947) and "Payment on Demand" (1951) .
On the set of one of the films, Dee met the actor Joel McCree, whom she married in 1933. Dee has been associated with David Selznick in several films, but ironically, her beauty played a disgusting joke on her: she lost the opportunity to be filmed in Selznick's largest film, Gone with the Wind (1939), for this very reason. Selznick considered casting her for the role of Melanie Wilkes, as director George Cukor had planned, but backed away when he decided that it was her beauty that could outshine new actress Vivien Leigh. After completing her film career, Dee settled with her husband on a ranch in eastern California's Ventura County, where they raised three children, as well as breeding horses. Their marriage, one of the longest in Hollywood history, lasted 57 years until McCree's death on their wedding anniversary in 1990. Frances Dee survived her husband by 14 years and died of complications from a stroke on March 6, 2004 at the age of 94. For her contribution to cinema, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
