Soviet actress Maria Kapnist was born in St. Petersburg in March 1914. Her parents were hereditary nobles, whose family came from Greece. The famous playwright and poet Vasily Kapnist is a direct relative of the actress.
Maria was the fifth child in the family. Surrounded by servants, the Kapnists lived in noble luxury in a large and wealthy house. The most famous and talented people of the city came to visit them. Among them was Fyodor Chaliapin himself. It was he who became one of the first teachers of little Mary. Together they did vocals. Crimean Tatars saved the surviving family members from hunger and persecution. After waiting out the most difficult time, Maria and her relatives returned to their hometown. Here the girl attended an acting studio, performed in theaters and at the same time studied at the Leningrad Institute.
Later she was persecuted again. The artist was accused of anti-Soviet propaganda and sent to the camps. Maria spent 15 years in prison. At the same time, modest performances on an impromptu stage became her only outlet. Upon her release, Kapnist and her daughter settled in Kiev.
The artist appeared in cinema in 1959. The first film with Maria Kapnist was named Tavria. The film was directed by Yuri Lysenko. Accidentally seeing the actress next to the box office, he immediately invited her to the shooting. Maria played the small role of the abbess. So her film career began.
