Born April 29, 1953, Konin, Poland - Polish composer, producer and actor.
Graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. Renounced his career as a diplomat for political reasons. He began to write music in order to eventually find freedom of expression. In the late 70s he collaborated with Jerzy Grotowski's Theater Laboratory. In 1977 he founded the Eighth Day Orchestra. The orchestra began touring Europe in the late 1970s and has completed 18 tours to date. In 1982, at the end of the orchestra's American tour, Kaczmarek recorded his first album, Music of the Final, for Flying Fish Records. Moved to Los Angeles in 1989. First achieved success in the United States in the theater. He composed music for the Goodman Theater (Chicago) and the Mark Taper Forum (Los Angeles). Received the Drama Desk Award for the music for Can't Be Called a Libertine (based on a play by John Ford) presented at the 1992 Shakespeare Festival in New York. The New York Times considered the music "worthy of Bertolucci's films and Visconti ".
In 2005 he won an Oscar for the soundtrack to the film Fairy Land (directed by Mark Foster). Also awarded by the National Council of Film Critics for Best Film Score; was nominated for a Golden Globe and an award. Anthony Esquita (BAFTA) for achievement in film music.
Kaczmarek also received an order for two symphonic works dedicated to important national events in the life of Poland: The Cantata of Freedom (2005), which marked the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity association, and the Oratorio 1956, created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the suppression uprising against the totalitarian regime in Poznan. The premieres of both works were broadcast live on Polish TV. Member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
He is working on setting up an institution in Poland like the Sundance Film Festival. The Rozbitek Institute, which is to become the European hub for innovation in film, theater, music and media, is slated to officially open in early 2009.
