January 1, 1900, Girona - October 27, 1990, Barcelona - Spanish-American jazz orchestra leader, arranger, singer, actor, composer, director and screenwriter.
His family emigrated to Cuba when Xavier was five years old. There he was trained to play the violin and played in the orchestra of the National Theater in Havana. On July 6, 1915, the entire family emigrated to New York. Here he starts playing in a band called "Gigolos" during the tango craze. In the late 1920s, when sound began to be used in films, he created the tango orchestra, with which he achieved some success in the first short musical films. By the early 1930s, he was starting to appear with his group in feature films. In 1931, his band was invited to open the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, where they later played full-time. For 30 years, he shuttled between New York and Los Angeles, alternating hotel, radio, recording and film performances. After suffering a stroke in 1971, he stopped his musical activity and returned to Spain.
