Born in New York City to producer, screenwriter and film actor Dominic Dunn and Ellen Beatriz Dunn (nee Griffin), who founded Justice for Homicide Victims .
Griffin Dunn is the older brother of actress Dominic Dunn and the nephew of John Gregory Dunn and Joan Didion.
In 1973 he married Kate Forte, but the marriage was annulled the following year. From December 9, 1989 to 1995, he was married to American actress Carey Lowell, where his daughter Hannah Dunne was born.
