December 20, 1898 - September 4, 1990 - American actress, Hollywood "star" of the 1930s - 1940s.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the son of shipowner Joseph Dunn and pianist Henry Adelaide.
Her debut on stage took place when the girl was only five years old - she took part in the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" based on the play by Shakespeare.
After her father's death, in 1910, Irene and her mother moved to Madison, Indiana, and settled with their grandparents. At thirteen, she began taking vocal and piano lessons, sang in a church choir (after the death of her father, her family lacked funds, so Irene had to earn money from an early age). She graduated from high school in 1916, attended the Indianapolis Conservatory the following year, and then entered the College of Music in Chicago. Irene dreamed of singing on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, but failed her audition and began her career by participating in musicals. In 1923, the actress made her Broadway debut. The audience accepted her, and the girl's career began to develop at a rapid pace. On July 16, 1928, the actress married the dentist Francis Griffin. Their marriage proved to be strong, the couple lived together until Griffin's death in 1965. Irene was noticed in 1929 when she played Magnolia in The Floating Theater. RKO management signed a contract with her, and soon Irene Dunn became one of the leading drama actresses of this film company. In 1931, for her role in the film "Cimarron", she received her first nomination for the "Oscar" .
Other notable films of the actress during this period were Ann Vickers (1933), There Is No Other Woman (1933), The Age of Innocence (1934) based on the 1921 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Edith Wharton. The ability to sing came in handy for the actress in the musical films Sweet Adeline (1935) and The Floating Theater (1936), a film adaptation of the musical that started her film career. In 1937, Irene co-starred with Cary Grant in one of her most famous films - the romantic comedy The Bitter Truth, which gave her a new role as a comedian. For this role, she was again nominated for an Oscar. Subsequently, she twice became Grant's partner on the set - in the films "My Beloved Wife" (1940) and "Serenade for a Penny" (1941) .
In the early 1940s, the actress returned to dramatic roles. Her talent sounded most vividly in the paintings Anna and the King of Siam (1946) and Life with Father (1947). By that time, Irene's age was approaching fifty, but the actress managed to preserve her figure and smooth facial features - make-up artists had to paint her wrinkles on the set of the films "I Remember Mom" ??(1948) and "Skylark in the Mud" (1950), where the actress played "age roles ". In 1952, starring in the film "It Grows in Trees", the actress retired from the cinema, but continued to appear on television for several years. Irene Dunn was active in charity work and adhered to conservative political views, thanks to which in 1957 President Eisenhower included her in the US delegation to the 12th session of the UN General Assembly. She was engaged in social activities until her death. In 1976, she donated $ 10,000 to restore the city fountain in Madison, the city of her childhood. The actress died on September 4, 1990 in Los Angeles (California, USA) from cardiac arrest.
