Filmed from an early age, dreaming of becoming an operator. Graduated from Christ College, Cambridge, studied film at the Polytechnic University in central London.
He started working for the BBC as an editor, but continued to develop and direct his own projects. He made his film debut as a cinematographer for Andrina (1981).
