She studied literature, philosophy and visual arts at the university, then worked as a director on television. Her debut feature film Blood and Sand (1987), set in Spain, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival under the Unusual Regard program. The picture tells about the strange relationship between the radiologist and his patient - the bullfighter. The main roles were played by Sami Frey and Andre Dussollet. Having received a scholarship from the French Academy ("Villa Medici"), Labrune directed her second film - the family drama "Without a Scream" ("Sans un cri", 1992), and in 1998 she presented the melodrama "If I Love You, Beware" - a story passionate love destroying everything in its path. Since 1992 Jeanne Labrune has written the script for the costume drama Vatel. She was unable to secure funding for the film and eventually ceded the script to Legende Production. The studio handed it over to Tom Stoppard for revision and appointed Roland Joffe as director. Gerard Depardieu played the role of the legendary butler Francois Vatel.
In the 2000s, Jeanne Labrue's work took on a new direction. She directed the comedy trilogy: "Your choice, Madame" (2000), "You have a bouquet!" (2002) and Speak, Speak (2004). The scripts of the three films are built according to the same scheme: a simple, everyday object becomes the trigger for a whole series of incredible events. In the first film it is a chest of drawers, in the second - a bouquet of flowers, in the third - a moth. Such stars of French cinema as Natalie Bay, Sandrine Quiberlain, Sylvie Testu, as well as Jean-Pierre Daroussen, Jeanne Labrune's "mascot" actor, took part in the comic phantasmagorias. The plots and lines of the characters are filled with references to psychoanalysis. The director's interest in psychoanalysis and his role in contemporary European society is also evident in the drama A Special Relationship (2010), which tells the story of a confused and unhappy “healer of souls”. According to the plot of the film, a psychoanalyst (Bolly Lanners), abandoned by his wife, dreams of being lost in the arms of a prostitute, while the prostitute herself (Isabelle Huppert) wants to understand herself with the help of psychoanalysis.
