People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Vasilyevich Shumsky (Yuri Shomin) is from Tiraspol, in the Kherson province. He was born on November 17 in 1887, in the family of a simple worker. Father died in a fire when Yura was only two years old. The family had seven children, so Shumsky had to work as a laborer from the age of thirteen. He was a loader and baker, accountant and timekeeper. At the same time, Yuri played in an amateur drama club, and the audience really liked the boy's play. In 1917, Yuri Shumsky enthusiastically greeted the revolution, which gave rise to a new life. He was appointed provincial commissar, and then the head of the department of public education.
