Born May 28, 1938 in Moscow.
Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR (1987).

It was named in honor of the husband of the great-aunt, actress, People's Artist of the Armenian SSR - Anaida Yakovlevna Maschyan, Armen Karpovich Gulakyan.
In 1960 he graduated from the film studies faculty of VGIK (workshop of N. Lebedev). Ph.D. in art history (1982). He worked as head of the lecture department, director of the Bureau of Propaganda of Soviet Cinema, editor-in-chief of the Soviet Film magazine, editor-in-chief of the Art of Cinema magazine, editor-in-chief of the All-Union Association Soyuzinformkino. Since 1980 he has been teaching at the Faculty of Film Studies of VGIK. In 1987-1989. - First Deputy Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Cinematography. In 1989-1991. - Head Department of Culture and Public Education of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. 1992-1999 - Chairman of the State Cinema of Russia. Since May 1999 - President of the International Fund for the Development of Film and Television for Children and Youth (Rolan Bykov Fund).
Author of a number of books, including Essays on Actors (1961), Who is he? (1968), "The Tenth Muse" (1977, jointly with A. Chernyshov), "For the sake of life on earth. Issue 1 "(1982, jointly with I. Shilova). Published in scientific collections of VNIIK; in the magazines Art of Cinema, Soviet Screen, Kinovedcheskiye Zapiski, Kino-Eye, Art, etc .; in the newspapers "Screen and Scene", "Soviet Culture", "Literaturnaya Gazeta", "Moscow News", "Izvestia", etc.
