His father worked in a factory and his mother was a social worker. His parents were immigrants from Mexico.
Although Michael has starred regularly since 1994 (mostly in independent films), his breakthrough came in 2004 when he starred in Million Dollar Baby and Crash, which won Best Picture Oscars. Michael received critical acclaim for his emotional performances in Crash. The following year, he starred in the TV series The Shield, which received a Golden Globe. In 2006, he starred in Oliver Stone's The Twin Towers, based on the events of September 11, 2001. He also had a small role in the film Babylon, which was also nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe. Thus, he starred in three films in a row that were nominated for an Oscar. In 2007, he starred as fledgling FBI agent Nick Memphis alongside Mark Wahlberg in The Shooter.
In 2006, Michael starred in Strike as Sala Castro, a real Mexican-American high school teacher who pushes a group of East Los Angeles, California students to fight for rights.
In 2009, he starred as a shopping mall security guard in Kinda Tough Security.
In 2012, he co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in the film Patrol. In the same year, filming began on the biographical film "Chavez", where he played the main role of the US national hero Cesar Chavez.
