Yves Simonot became widely known in 1987 when his film Intimate Power received nine Genie Award nominations (including Best Film and Director of the Year), Canada's highest film award. In the same year, Simono's drama In the Shadow of the Wind, starring Steve Banner, was presented at the 37th Berlin IFF.
In 2002 Simono's mini-series Napoleon was voted Best German Television Film by Horzu magazine and was awarded the Goldene Kamera Prize.
The 2007 HBO TV film Bury My Heart in Wounded Knee, based on Dee Brown's novel, received 17 Primetime Emmy Award nominations (the most nominations that year), winning five of them, including the Best TV movie. Simono was awarded the Directors Guild of America Award for Best Director in a Miniseries or Television Film.
